Literacy

 

Illiterate known as "every person over the age of ten and not systematic in any educational institution not up to the functional level in reading and writing in Arabic, numeracy and other knowledge

 

Starting march literacy in Sultanate of Oman

Illiteracy is a complex social problem that is a major cause of underdevelopment, social phenomenon vehicle affecting the individual and society alike, so that illiteracy is a fundamental obstacle obstacles which hinder the progress of manpower from playing their full role in the development processes and consequently affect negatively on those operations, Hence the interest at all levels regionally and internationally, in the Arab nation reflects that interest in the unanimity reached through Arab countries to formulate and adopt Arab strategy for literacy in the conference hosted by Baghdad in 1976. This strategy identified magnitude of the problem and the aim and principles and implementation phases and trends underlying the work and operational procedures for those principles

 

Literacy has been a key objective of the government of the Sultanate of Oman, therefore Since the beginning of the blessed Renaissance in 1970, proceeded adult literacy along with the spread of education among the young. Therefore, the activity has begun literacy in the school year 73 / 1974. And at the beginning of this activity was a school established two academic scholar granted after testimony freedom from illiteracy is at a level equal success in the fourth grade (formal education), then join the liberal ranks of adult illiteracy, They are teaching classes in the evening because that commensurate with the circumstances of the lives of scholars who will work in the morning. In an effort to improve literacy services, in line with the changes

In Omani curriculum, as well as in line with what the contents of the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012), has been in the 2005/06 academic year extension of literacy to two to three years after the student enrolled in the seventh grade public education in educational centers for adult education.

 

The illiteracy rate in Oman  9,1% in the age group 15 to 45 years, according to statistics of the final year of the census of population and housing facilities conducted in 2003, The most recent indicators are not final yet indicates that the rate of illiteracy by the end of 2006 is expected to decline to 7.2% in the same age category, which is moderate compared with living conditions similar to the circumstances of the Sultanate, Be good that this ratio is much less than it was thirty years ago.

That would mean the success of literacy programs in the Sultanate of Oman. The strategic objective current progress at the level of literacy is to improve by 50%% increase in levels of adult literacy by 2015, especially for women, in the sense that the current education plans seeks to reduce the current number of illiterates in the Sultanate by half by 2015, in implementation of the Sultanate of its international obligations, signed by the UNESCO sponsored international conferences, including the Conference on Education for All, held in Dakar in 2000, which recommended to the percentage of literacy by 2015.
 

First : Arab Day for the Eradication of Illiteracy :

The Executive Council of the Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Sciences in 1970 and the unanimous recommendation as the eighth day of January every year-day Arab literacy, was chosen today as when it was organ (8 January 1966) to be an Arab-day literacy, it was  celebrated for the first time on January 8, 1972 and since then remained constant celebrated annually.
 

Second : World Day for the Eradication of Illiteracy :

The 8th of September of every year as the International Day of Literacy as a result of the resolution adopted by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at its 14th of 1966.
 

Adult education : origin and goals

Perhaps one of the main reasons that have led to growing interest in education in the Sultanate is the constant quest to build a modern  Hi-Tech and  create a productive society presses rights enjoyed by the level of dignified life. So it was natural and to this end have a great interest in education and adult education enjoys a great deal of attention by virtue of what the senior position in the community and has played a prominent role in the present and making a significant impact on shaping the future but they are influential force to push forward and here comes from the State's interest in adult education in the context of continuing education affirmation of their role in social and economic activity in the light of the foregoing it can be said that the Sultanate of Oman attention to adult education came to achieve the following objectives :

Clarification of how to study the various classes and registration requirements and organizing work in the centers need access to education to the widest ever, without restrictions on individuals who missed the train  of education for any reason. Longer-treatment of waste for educational or education resulting from the leak and leaving school early for family reasons, social or other reasons. - The necessity of adopting forms of education  Diversity (systematic study and free) to achieve education for sustainability and comprehensiveness. - The need to create Omani community members of the Movement of economic and social development in the country.

 

    The Adult education has started in the   Sultanate in the academic year 1981/82 and is on the growth and proliferation of continuous educational surge experienced by the country in light of the blessed renaissance. Education is parallel to the formal education in the curricula and teaching methods, is provided for those who lost their education at a seminar for circumstances beyond their control and free from illiteracy to continue their education to higher levels. Included regulations for adult education through controls the organization of work and examination systems, and the school plans to open people and other regulatory procedures for the activity. The system is adult education systems according to the study are : -

 

Systematic study :-the study and is attended by the scholar and attended by an adult education centers and apply for the exam on behalf of the Center by attending. Study 2-Free (domestic) :-a study that enrolled student status but taught in the home and apply for the exam at the center closest to the residence or school and begin the study in adult education quite systematic and free from the seventh grade and up to the twelfth grade.
